| Tread softly. With classics, tires were constantly swapped and/or changed, well, just because and because they could be. You'd swap out those sticky summer treads for knobby winter tires. Or jack the rear up high to make room for those fat meats. Sure the speedo would be off, but that had little impact in the way of drivability. Heck, you could even mount a set of chains on those old steel rims and tires; in fact, it was recommended by the manufacturer! Nowadays, not only are cars manufactured with a strict set of tire sizes, but any deviation opens up all kinds of problems. For one, a non stock tire or rim more than likely won't even fit inside the wheel well. Usually they'll hit chassis/suspension components, causing damage to both in most cases. Not to mention screwing up all the ABS/brake sensors, including the speedometer and transmissions shift points, a big no no in terms of warranties and/or engine longevity.
