| Like most Christian holidays, Candlemas is basically an old Pagan tradition with fancy new Jesus decals slapped on. While the holiday is officially devoted to the purification of the Virgin Mary, in practice it's the due date to throw out your Christmas tree and start thinking about Spring while watching furry critters emerge from their holes.

Start in Cape Town, a 12 hour flight from Britain but with just two hours' time difference. January and February, the hottest months, are when the city moves outdoors. Galanthus (snowdrops), with their cheerful green and white blooms give us a respite from winter's gloom. Snowdrops prefer moist, rich, well drained soil, with light shade. They also like cooler climates, so you will want to plant them in cooler areas of your landscape. Certain varieties perform better in Oklahoma, but you should plant these diminutive flowers in large groups or in rock gardens where they can be truly enjoyed.
