| In general, any motor vehicle with gross weight or combined gross weight of 10,000 pounds or less must use any of the following: applicable traction devices, tire chains, or snow tires. Strawberry plants are called "Straw" berries for a reason they get the kind of nutrients they need as the straw decays. You can put a layer of straw up to 6 inches thick around, and even a little over them for the winter. They won't be growing much during the dark days of winter anyways, so light isn't as much of a concern. The straw will protect them from the dessicating effects of wind, as well as repeated frost thaw cycles. In the spring, pull off most of the straw, leaving a layer 2 3 inches thick around the base of the plant, keeping it away from the main stem.
