| The successful Winter student will culture neurons derived from control and Down syndrome IPSC and determine whether during the neuronal maturation process Down syndrome neurons display differences in morphology, number and size of neuronal extensions (axons) or number of interneuronal connections (synapses) using microscopy and image analysis software. The student will further use immune fluorescent detection methods to assess the level and localisation of proteins associated with Alzheimers disease in the Down syndrome neurons. This project aims to further develop the peptide gels for delivery of cell growth factors to injured skin, for example in burn healing. An initial part of the work involves characterizing the physical properties of the gels and showing how gel elasticity, surface functionalization, surface charge, etc affect the differentiation of stem cells. A separate aspect involves incorporation of protein and non protein drugs into the hydrogel and testing their rates of release, in parallel with determining the rates of gel breakdown under physiological conditions.
